Alex brings a breadth of experience from his years as a senior designer at Harry Holding Studio, working across commercial, public and residential landscapes within one of the UK’s leading garden-design studios. His role included leading major projects and multiple gardens for the Chelsea Flower Show, most recently for the Eden Project.

Before garden design, Alex worked in sound design for film and television. This earlier creative career sharpened his ability to interpret mood, tone and subtle verbal cues, translating what clients say, and what they find hard to say, into emotive and layered design responses.

A childhood in the Scottish Highlands instilled a lasting love of plants, wild landscapes and natural plant communities. That fascination continues to shape his work today.

Process

01 — Outline Design

Everything begins with a detailed brief to understand our clients’ wants and needs, alongside a survey of the site, its context and how the garden needs to work. From this we develop the overarching layout, atmosphere, initial material ideas and planting character, refining these before arriving at a clear design direction.

02 — Detailed Design

Once the outline design is agreed, it is developed into the drawings, details and specifications needed for quoting and construction. This includes construction drawings, levels, materials, planting design and coordination with specialist consultants where required.

We remain involved as the garden is built, resolving details on site and helping to ensure the original design intent is carried through. Planting is developed as an integral part of the design and can be overseen through installation and establishment.

A finished garden is just the beginning, and ensuring it evolves as intended is key. We can help find the right horticulturist to guide this process, alongside regular reviews and ongoing advice as the garden develops.
